ERWIN – The Elizabethton Cyclones and the Unicoi Co. Blue Devils met on an overcast evening in Erwin in what would turn into a barnburner between the two teams with the Blue Devils taking a walk-off 3-2 victory.
Both teams were scoreless after the first inning and although the game started slow, Zac Workman got things heated up with a home run over the left-field fence to put Elizabethton up 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
Elizabethton had an opportunity in the second after Cade Russell got on first with a single and advanced to second base on a steal. Wesley Shankles struck out leaving the Cyclones with two outs and the inning came to a close as Russell got a little too ambitious with a steal to third and was out on a close call.
After allowing a couple of walks with Unicoi Co. runners on first and second, the Blue Devil’s Alex Green hit a nice ball into right field, but Zac Workman was there to make the grab and had a killer throw to keep runners from advancing.
On a full count with runners still on first and second, Gage Treadway struck out Valentine Batrez to end the inning and keep the Cyclones up by one run.
The Blue Devils finally came alive as Brayden Hendrickson hit a single to center and later stole second. Unicoi was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the third making it 2-1 after a ball hit down the third baseline was scooped up by Wesley Shankles. The subsequent throw to first ended up in the dugout on an error allowing Hendrickson to score.
The rest of the game went scoreless into the seventh inning.
It looked as if Elizabethton had it in the bag, but a pitching change earlier in the sixth inning by Elizabethton allowed Unicoi to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After leading the entire game going into the seventh, Unicoi’s Nicky Satterly smacked a deep ball into center field off a Zac Workman pitch. That’s all it took as the Satterly’s hit drove in two runs as Unicoi stole a win from a shocked Elizabethton Cyclone team on the walk-off.
