HAPPY VALLEY – University High and Unaka met in the District 1-A Consolation game Tuesday night at Happy Valley.
Unable to get anything going offensively, the Rangers fell 60-34 to the Bucs.
It was a tight first period and mainly a defensive showing for both teams as they ended in a tie in the first period. Gavin Seigfried would score on a three-pointer for a good start by Unaka but both teams could only muster six points in the period as scoring was hard to come by for both sides.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 10-7 lead early in the second period, but Ryan Sexton for Unaka hit a three to tie it up. Unaka was starting to look better on the boards, but a couple of turnovers and fouls would put University High up 17-10.
Sexton came to the rescue again hitting another three to make it 17-13. Fouls and scores on both ends would end the first half with a score of 19-15, advantage Buccaneers.
University High struck first at the beginning of the second half. Joseph Armstrong would start the second period with back-to-back shots. Everything just seemed to go the Buccaneers way in the third period as Unaka committed more fouls than they would have liked.
Baskets and turnovers went the Bucs way at every turn as Unaka struggled to get anything going. This would result in a 10-point lead for University High.
Things did not improve for the Rangers going into the fourth period. A usually potent offense struggled against the Buc defense. Unaka simply couldn’t get any penetration…and on the rare occasion they did, they couldn’t get any shots to fall.
Things continued to go the Bucs way as they shot out to a 20-point lead with just under five minutes to go.
To add insult to injury, a skirmish at the Bucs end led to a technical foul on Unaka’s Sexton after a foul on the Buc’s AJ Murphy. Murphy would hit both free throws along with John Carter hitting both technical shots.
This would put University High up 56-31. With just over two minutes to go, Unaka conceded the victory and brought in subs. The Bucs followed suit and the last couple minutes were nothing more than exhibition.
