Will the Carter County Car Club be able to continue holding their weekly summer cruise-ins on Elk Avenue in Downtown Elizabethton for 2022?
That will be one of questions discussed at Thursday’s Elizabethton City Council meeting as Car Club President Thomas Franklin has made the request through Programming and Special Events Coordinator Kelly Kitchens.
In the cover letter to the council, Kitchens said, “The Carter County Car Club has staged a weekly event in Downtown Elizabethton each Saturday evening from April through October for several years.
“The Car Club also hosts a day-long annual event which will take place on Saturday, July 9, running from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes closing the 400 block of E Street, followed by normal procedures of the weekly car show format from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.”
The Car Club has used money collected from the weekly event to purchase Christmas gifts for children in need.
However, recently some business owners have taken exception to the show taking place every weekend in the downtown area with some complaining that the cars take up parking that customers normally use. Proponents of the show have said it brings thousands of people to Downtown Elizabethton.
After a year-long absence due to COVID-19, the cruise-ins resumed last year.
The City Council meets at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
