It was Homecoming 2022 at VanHuss-White Gym as the University High Bucs paid a visit to the Hampton campus.
Students and fans enjoyed the outcome as Logan Whitehead torched the nets for a career-high 21 points to pace the Bulldogs in a 65-56 win.
The contest didn’t get off to a good start for the home team as the visitors from Johnson City bolted out to a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
AJ Murphy put his team out front in the quarter scoring nine points and had help from Andrew Cole and John Carter who netted six and five points respectively.
Conor Burleson scored four points in the period for Hampton. Hayden Campbell, Cadon Buckles, and Isaiah McCoury each contributed with two points each while Whitehead hit 1-of-2 from the foul line.
The ‘Dogs quickly righted the ship just before the half as they rallied to even the score at 30-30 at the break.
Whitehead’s six points in the second quarter helped to turn the tide as Hampton found themselves at the charity stripe nine times in the period missing only one of their attempts.
Michael Harrison buried a trey and a deuce for five points with four points recorded by Buckles and Morgan Lyons.
Coming out of the locker room at the break, Hampton found their offensive stride as the ‘Dogs took control of the game by outscoring the Bucs 18-8 in the third to take a 48-38 advantage to the fourth period.
Burleson added five more to his scoring column in the quarter with Harrison and Lyons chipping in with four points. Dalton Holtsclaw drained a trey while Whitehead picked up another deuce.
Hampton closed out the contest in the fourth by matching the Bucs effort as U-H did manage to outscore the home team 18-17 in the final stanza.

Carter led the Bucs with 17 points for the game with teammates Murphy and Andrew Cole finishing with 13 points apiece.
