Leonard Dean “L.D.” Gilbert Sr., 86, Butler, passed away Monday, January 3, 2022, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Eller and Bertha Potter Gilbert.
L.D. served in the United States Air Force. He was a truck driver and farmer. He loved to work with horses.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, JC Gilbert, and two sisters, Ann Ellenberger and Myrtle Stout.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Barbara Buser Gilbert; his children, Leonard Dean Gilbert Jr., Mountain City, James Carl (Robin) Gilbert, Butler, and Sue Ann Gilbert, Hampton; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Betty Trivette and Billie Andrews; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 8, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Gary Bowman officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 9:50 a.m. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery, will be Leonard Gilbert Jr., Jim Gilbert, JC Gilbert, Chad Stout, Jacob Cooper and Jeffrey Lynch. Honorary pallbearer will be David Shell. Military Honors will be provided by Veterans Honor Guard DAV 39, Bluff City. The family would like to express a special thank you to the Geriatrics Department of the VA Hospital. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9:50 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery.
