The Mathes family gathered to celebrate the love and marriage of Carroll “Chuck” and Betty Mathes on Saturday, December 4, 2021. Local friends and family enjoyed a dinner, music, photos, and memories.
Married on December 5, 1952, after a whirlwind romance, the couple spent many years in Elizabethton, Tenn. They also lived in Ulysses, Kansas periodically.
The couple are the parents of seven children: Allen Mathes of Ulysses, Kansas; Kenny Mathes, formerly of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Mary Lee Klein of Ulysses, Kansas; Donna Meadows of Topeka, Kansas; Joey Mathes of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Robbie Mathes of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and Melinda Pierce of Blountville, Tenn. They are blessed with 27 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Carroll and Betty met in Elizabethton shortly after Carroll completed his service in the Navy. They were married across the street from Betty’s mother’s house and lived most of their married life in Elizabethton. They have recently made Ulysses their home to the delight of their local family.
When asked the secret to their remarkable marriage, Betty replied, “My family is the greatest joy of my life. I love each and every one.” Carroll joked, “I just said yes dear a lot.”
