By Nov. 27, residents can take the ice in a skating rink at Covered Bridge Park.
The Elizabethton City Council approved the rink on Friday.
“We will have everything set up for people to enjoy from November 27th until early January 16th of next year,” said Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Director Mike Mains. “We will not only have the ice skating rink, but there will also be a variety of other events for people to enjoy.”
Mains said the department had hoped to create the rink last year. “We wanted to do this last year during Christmas but were not able to,” he said. “However the Christmas lights alone in Downtown drew a large number of people to the area. This year, with the addition of the ice skating rink, we hope to have a great turnout each week.”
Installation will begin two days before Thanksgiving, with a target opening of Nov. 27. “Those interested in participating in the rink will need to contact the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce, and there will be an online registration process that will take place through them in order to participate. The cost to participate in the rink will be $10 per person for one hour.”
Mains said he expects high demand for the rink. “Everyone is going to do their best to be able to get on the ice but we are limited with the space we have.”
