Elizabethton’s iconic covered bridge is serving as the inspiration for the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce gingerbread construction contest.
“This is the first time we have put together an event like this, and it is an opportunity for any bakers or people who enjoy making gingerbread houses to take part in a fun competition,” said Joy McCray, director of development for the chamber.
“The theme of the contest is based around our beautiful covered bridge, and there are going to be three categories which are youth, amateur, and professional with prizes being awarded to each of those three groups,” she said. “Along with those, there will be corporate entries for our banks or big businesses to take part in the contest as well.”
All entries must have something to do with the Covered Bridge. Also, 85 percent of the presentation must be made with edible confections and the entry can be no larger than 9 inches by 13 inches.
Entries for the gingerbread covered bridge competition are $10 for individuals and $25 for corporate entries. Entries must be turned in to the chamber by Nov. 14, where they will be on display until Dec. 17, when they can be picked up or contributed to “Grinchmas in the park.”
“We really just wanted to get back to the holiday and get back into the spirit.,” McCrary said. “We hope that this can be something that welcomes all of our families in Elizabethton and our new neighbors to be a part of the community.”
