The way Mike Poe plays the Elizabethton Golf Course might make one think that he could play the golf course blindfolded.
Poe took a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round where he finished with a 71, a one-under-par, as those who were chasing Poe entering the day’s final round faded throughout the day.
The steady play of Poe resulted in 17 pars to go along with his birdie.
It was Poe’s ninth overall title in the tournament and the 87th of his career. He jokingly told the tournament namesake, William B. Greene Jr, that if they came up short for a trophy to let him know and he would lend them one.
Poe, who will be turning 65 in November, held off defending champion Rick Mays who finished with a 66 to finish in a three-way tie with Cary Daniels and Tim Moore.
Daniels has three consecutive second-place finishes in the tournament.
“I can’t say enough about what William B. Greene Jr. has done for golf,” said Poe. “Not only here with this tournament but throughout the state of Tennessee.”
Super Senior Division
Bob Ross held off Danny Jones on the final of action to take the Super Senior Division in the ETA. Ross finished the final round with a 72 as did Jones to finish with a three-day total of 222 to Jones 223.
George McQueen finished in third place with Pat Kenney collecting fourth.
