The Elizabethton Cyclones were looking to turn their season rubber match with the Sullivan East Patriots into a District 1-AA championship but the Patriots had other thoughts on the matter.

Regular-season champs East bolted out to a 19-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in taking the title 55-39 inside the Dyer Dome Tuesday evening.

Both teams will be hosting a region game on Saturday evening as the two-seed Cyclones will entertain the South Greene Rebels and East will take on Chuckey Doak inside the Dyer Dome. The game time for both is 7 pm.

The Patriots hit a barrage of five treys in the first period to establish the lead behind Dylan Bartley who dropped in seven points and Ethan Bradford’s six points.

Elizabethton, meanwhile, struggled to find any offense as Bryce VanHuss’s trey and a free throw from Nicholas Wilson proved to be the only two points for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones finally got their game legs under them somewhat as they scored 11 in the second period but East also stayed hot hitting for 14 to take a 33-15 advantage to the locker room at the break.

Wilson added four to his scoring register in the second with four points while Jake Roberts knocked down a trey. Nate Stephens and William Willock added two points apiece.

Elizabethton had their best period coming out of the locker room as the Cyclones outscored East 18-13 behind Roberts nine points from three treys.

Brayden Phillips added a trey while Stephens, Willocks, and Wilson each scored two in the run.

Trailing 46-33, the Cyclones needed a big flourish in the final period of regulation but sputtered to the finish line as East barely outscored Elizabethton 9-6 to close out the contest.

Phillips drained two treys in the final eight minutes to account for the Cyclones’ points.

Roberts finished with 12 points while Phillips collected nine.

Bradford totaled 17 points in the victory while Bartley hit double figures with 12 points.
