Elizabethton- Thursday evening in Elizabethton brought with it more high school hardwood action as the Elizabethton Cyclones’ freshman team hosted the Johnson County Longhorns of Mountain City.
The contest kicked off with both teams going back and forth, each squad matching the other’s score. However, it would be the Cyclones that would begin to pull away and widen the advantage by the end of the first period. After one, it was Elizabethton on top, 17-15.
And while the Longhorns were able to storm back in the second quarter and even tie things up on two separate occasions, the Cyclones would once again find a way to inch ahead just before the halftime break. As both teams headed into the locker room, it was Elizabethton in charge 34-33.
Just as we had seen throughout the game in the first two quarters, it was yet again a series of lead change after lead change throughout the third stanza. And yet again, the Cyclones would have the singe digit lead at the quarter break, 50-42.
And in a change of pace, there would be no lead changes in the final act as the Cyclones would increase their advantage and roll to a big victory over the Longhorns, 73-49.
In the win, the Cyclones were led by Will Churchill who scored 19 points in the contest, followed by Zack Bates who put 18 of his own as well as Mason Ball who dropped 10 points.
