Sullivan East put on a long-distance shooting clinic in the first half of Tuesday’s Three Rivers Conference clash with Happy Valley at Bayless gymnasium. The Patriots – led by forward Dylan Bartley – connected on 12 three-balls with 10 of those coming in the first half of an 82-64 Sullivan East victory.
For his part, Bartley hit four of eight from distance with guard Ethan Bradford connecting on four of seven treys as the Patriots built a 52-29 halftime bulge and held off a determined second-half effort from the Warriors.
“I thought we played really well, but they went on the second-quarter spurt. But until then we were right there,” Warriors head coach Jeremy Maddox said. “East is a really good team that shoots the ball extremely well, and they did tonight.
“We started out in a zone because we were trying to prevent dribble drives but it created openings for three’s. We should have gotten out of that earlier.”
East (12-5, 4-0 TRC) led just 24-19 after one period but went on a 28 point scoring spree in the second period with Bradford and post Mason Montgomery each knocking down a pair of triples.
HV (1-9, 0-5 TRC) got 15 first-half points from forward Blake Young who finished with 18 points before fouling out with 4:19 remaining.
Post Alex Lunceford scored a game-high 28 points for the Warriors and was strong in the paint with seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Lunceford led a Happy Valley resurgence in the third period with 12 points on six-for-six shooting cutting seven points off the Patriots lead.
“Alex did a good job working inside,” Maddox said. “He got some good post up’s before they could get set up and I am proud of how my guys executed what we wanted to do and how hard they played. This is a game we can build on and once again I thought we played really hard.”
Happy Valley closed to within nine at 71-62 with guard Andrew Clawson hitting a trey and Young dropping in two deuce buckets, but East had a finishing kick as Clayton Ivester hit a pair of buckets and John Waldon knocked down a trey down the stretch.
