‘Dogs pull out a win over Providence

The Hampton boys were wanting a pick-me-up before going to the Christmas break and got what the doctor ordered as Hampton staved off a late charge by Providence to take a tight-fisted 57-55 victory in basketball action.
Hampton found themselves looking up at Providence after the first 16 minutes of play when both teams heading to the locker room with Providence in control 36-29.
Jacob Reese and Jayme Peay paced Providence in the opening half as Reese filled the nets for 12 points and Peay added eight.
The ‘Dogs meanwhile got eight points from Conor Burleson to set the tone and keep Hampton within firing distance. Michael Harrison contributed with five points in the half while Conor Jones and Morgan Lyons tallied four points.
Coach Ned Smith’s ‘Dogs got things turned in their direction in the third quarter by outscoring the visitors 17-8 to take a 46-44 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Lyon took the lead for the ‘Dogs in the quarter scoring 10 points to help push his team into the lead.
The contest was neck and neck in the final eight minutes as both teams managed to score 11 as Hampton relied on a Dalton Holtsclaw three with 2.1 seconds left and trailing by one to take the win.
Providence’s half-court shot fell short at the buzzer to preserve the win for Hampton.
Lyon’s 18 points led the Bulldogs in the win. Burleson totaled nine in the game with Harrison finishing with eight points.
Reece finished with 14 and Peay 10 points to pace the visiting Providence team.
