A large white tent will soon be taking up residency in the TLC Community Center parking lot.
No…this tent is not for COVID-19 testing.
According to Angie Odom, founder and director of the TLC Community Center, the large tent has been rented in efforts to help Mommy Mart clients. She explained that since the pandemic, allowing current Mommy Mart clients to come into the building to shop safely has been difficult. For the time being, when clients needed anything, there has been a curbside service available.
“It’s really hard to shop for somebody else,” Odom explained.
This is where the tent comes in.
The large white tent will be set up Monday.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, while picking up free food, which is offered weekly to anyone, current clients, and those needing to become clients, will be given directions, and can then go into the tent to shop.
Those who qualify to become a client are mothers with a child, or children, aged 5 and under, or currently pregnant. To sign up, you need to bring an I.D. and proof of children (i.e. a birth certificate, WIC, an ultrasound, etc.)
Once signing up, those with children should be prepared to shop without children due to safety concerns (children can be watched by someone outside the tent or do not have to be brought). Social distancing practices will be in place, including masks (these will be available), sanitization, etc.
There will be a limit of items per child to get on Tuesday, however this is just to evaluate needs in the tent. The tent will be open on Wednesday as well. Attendees are urged to come on both days.
The tent will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All items are free in the tent.
Odom noted that all items in the tent have been donated thanks to the Abby and Andrew Consignment Sale.
“The big thank you is to them,” she said. “They had a choice of taking items they had left that didn’t sell back home or donating them. A lot of the items we’re putting under the tent are their donations.”
The events keep coming for the tent…later in the week on Friday and Saturday, people can purchase goods from Gifts of Hope Collective Goods Company. They sell goods like books, educational goods, etc. This is great for homeschooling families. The center will receive a large scale donation from profits, which in turn helps pay for the tent rental. This will be available Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
As previously stated, meals are given out weekly on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m to 2 p.m. This is for everyone. Foods include a variety with canned goods, vegetables, meat, breakfast items, and other ingredients that can be used for people to cook. The goal is to provide meals that last for several days.
