Ida Jean “Jeannie” Lyons, 72, of the Crabtree Community of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness. Jeannie was born in Roan Mountain to the late Gurney and Iva Lee Hill Markland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, James “Jim” Lyons; three sisters, Brenda Mayse, Lisa Wilson and Faye Campbell; five brothers, Eddie Markland, Ross Markland, Billy Markland, William Markland and Herman Markland; and two great-grandchildren, Connor Markland and Carson Markland.
Jeannie was a housewife and homemaker. She was known as a momma and nanny to all that knew her and much loved and admired for her sweetness, her loving nature and her ability to love everyone. Jeannie was of the Free Will Baptist faith. She was a compulsive cleaner; she loved to clean her home and took great pride in that. Above anything else she loved her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her entire family and of course, her beloved dog, Ruffles.
Those left to cherish Jeannie’s wonderful memory include her children, Peggy Lyons and husband Ricky, Allan Lyons and Christy, Kathy Lyons and Jamie Lyons and wife Flora; her grandchildren, Candace Lyons, Cody Lyons, Brittney Reece and John Williamson, David Reece, Katherine Reece, Billy Markland and Brandon Markland; her great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Parlier and husband Sonny, Shatona Mann and husband Terry, Kelly Reece and Margaret Whitehead and husband Roger; and two brothers, Robert Markland and wife Helen and James Markland. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A service to celebrate Jeannie’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with John McCoury officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the home of Peggy Lyons at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 24, in the Moreland Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 9 a.m. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses at Sycamore Shoals Hospital and the Johnson City Medical Center and Dr. Wesley Hanson and William and Henry Burrow. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Animal Shelter, 135 Sycamore Shoals Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carter County is mandating that all citizens who live in or visit Carter County wear masks in public. In keeping in accordance with this mandate, all visitors to the visitation or the graveside service are required to wear a mask or facial covering.
