HAPPY VALLEY – After an exciting night for Carter County football Friday night, it was time for the younger stars to get their chance Monday during junior varsity contests.
One junior varsity squad, the Happy Valley Warriors, started their week by hosting the Blue Devils of Unicoi County Monday Evening.
The game started off slow, as both teams were only able to gain one first down each on their inaugural drives.
Things would continue this way for the remainder of the first quarter, as both defenses stood firm against the opposing offenses.
However, things would spark for the Unicoi offense as Eli Bratton hauled in a thirty yard toss to put his team in the red zone for the first time in the game.
Only a couple plays later Nolan Bennett would catch a dump pass from his quarterback Ty Engle from ten yards out to give the Blue Devils a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter.
With a minute to go before the halftime break, it seemed as if the Blue Devils would strike again after two consecutive third-down conversions, taking the ball into Warrior territory.
But the Warrior defense would step up big time with a Spencer Hall interception at their own fifteen-yard line to end the first half.
The second half of the contest started just the same as the first, with both offenses fighting to gain first downs but being upended by the opposing defenses.
Things would remain a stalemate until late in the third quarter when the Warriors were put in a great scenario.
After a failed attempt at a fake punt by the Devils, the Warriors were gifted the ball inside the red zone to start their drive.
And after moving the ball inside of the ten-yard line, the Warriors would be intercepted at the goal line as Bratton would take the pick all the way back to midfield to end the third quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, it seemed that the Warriors were finally going to even the odds after Waylon Mckeehan took the ball fifty yards into the end zone, but when everyone had finished celebrating, a little yellow marker could be seen on the field.
The Warriors would get another chance at a score after the resilient effort on defense was rewarded with possession of the football with four minutes remaining.
And after driving the ball down the majority of the field on this final drive, the Warriors would be stopped in dramatic fashion as the Blue Devis would record a sack on fourth down to end the ball game with a final score in favor of Unicoi County, 6-0.
