GRAY – Both teams had ample opportunities to score in the first half of Monday’s junior varsity contest between Elizabethton and Daniel Boone played at Daniel Boone High School.
It was just a case of making too many mistakes drawing flags on both sides as well as turnovers that allowed the first 20 minutes to end in a dead draw 0-0.
However, as has been the case the entire season to date for the Cyclone JV squad, there is something about the second half that causes the Cyclones to put on their Superman capes and turn the final 20 minutes into an exciting finish.
For the second week in a row, the Cyclone offense got rolling in the third quarter as Cyclone quarterback Dalton Mitchell led his team down the field and capped off the drive with a seven-hard run through heavy traffic to stake EHS to a 6-0 advantage with 5:13 left in the quarter.
Sean Smithdeal sent the ball through the uprights for a 7-0 lead.
After the Cyclones had a stellar series on the ensuing possession by Boone, the Cyclones offense came back on the field and went back to work.
Once again, Mitchell had his hand in the Cyclones second score as he found Jack Farris on a beautifully placed 27-yard touchdown pass with 1:39 left in the third quarter to extend ‘Betsy’s lead to 14-0 after Smithdeal’s PAT.
While Boone continued to fight to get into the end zone from that point, it was all about the Cyclone defense that stood up play after play to keep the Blazers at bay as Elizabethton ran its season record to 3-1 in junior varsity play.
“The first half, we get going three steps forward and six or seven back getting in our own way,” said Cyclone head coach Brian Jenkins. “In the second half, we rolled the dice again with another onside kick and was able to get it and roll from there.”
The Elizabethton JV will be back in action on Monday, September 21st when they travel to Science Hill for their second showdown of the season with the Hilltoppers.
Game time will be 6 pm.
