On Friday evening, I went comet NEOWISE chasing again and decided to head up Roan Mountain with the idea of going up to Carver’s Gap. Instead, I found a pull-off about three-quarters of the way up the mountain at about the 5000 feet level and stopped there instead, saving the hike in. This pull-off offered a wonderful view of the northwest sky, ideal for searching for the comet. Well, the weather didn't cooperate Friday night with a squall line of storms hugging the horizon all night. So the comet chase became a quest for fire. These are a few of the evening’s best lightning shots, and yes, I did manage to capture the comet in a few.
The mention of a storm will send many folks into a nervous tizzy worrying about the lightning and thunder that so often attaches themselves to storms that pass through the area.
And while lightning must be respected and safety needs to be of a high priority, the displays that are often present during such storms can leave memorable images that are spectacular to look at.
Star Photographer Larry Souders continued his search for the Neowise Comet recently but found himself capturing some amazing shots of a thunderstorm passing through the area at the time.
