Members of the Shady Oaks Garden Club recently celebrated the announcement by National Garden Clubs that the club is the First Place National Overall Winner of an award for their promotion of National Garden Week. To promote National Garden Week the club organized a tour of gardens in Johnson City that included a plant sale that featured member’s grown non-invasive, native and hard to find plants. Members provided education material for each plant. The tour included private home gardens as well as gardens in public places and highlighted innovative gardening solutions such as water management.
Shady Oaks Garden Club was formed 62 years ago and is a member of the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Clubs Inc. The mission of the club is to help beautify the area and to increase appreciation and awareness of horticulture, landscape, gardening and environmental concerns and floral design.
The club provides financial and hands-on support to a variety of municipal, educational and environmental organizations.
Monthly programs cover a wide variety of topics from regional experts as well as field trips and workshops. Our meetings during the months of Daylight Savings time are held in the late afternoon on the first Thursday of the month at members’ homes. During the months of Standard time we meet on the first Wednesday morning of the month. Due to the COVID virus our normal meeting location at a Johnson City church may need to be relocated. We will have more information about this possible change later in the year.
Shady Oaks is a friendly active club that welcomes all. For information about meetings and club projects or membership information, visit the website www.shadyoaksgardenclub.org.
