City of Elizabethton lists several jobs available

Despite varying reports on unemployment rates in the area, due in part to COVID-19, there are various jobs being listed available online. Additionally, there are routes available to help find a job for you.
According to the CIty of Elizabethton website, and their Facebook page, there are current openings for maintenance workers, firefighters, an accountant and a system engineer. These are shown underneath their job openings tab near the second tier of the website on the homepage. By clicking that tab, you can find the listings and information about them.
  1. Maintenance Worker: is for the Water Resources Department.
“This position conducts preventive maintenance on all types of water resources equipment, maintains all pump stations, grinder pumps, construction equipment, buildings, and tools, and performs other essential duties as required,” the website states.
Minimum requirements for this position are a high school diploma or GED and a valid Driver’s License. Benefits are included, and applicants are wanted until the position is filled.
  1. Firefighter: This job opening is part of annual testing for full-time firefighters. It is being held from June 15-26. The process includes a written test, a physical test for agility and an extensive background review. The minimum requirements are U.S. citizenship, a high school diploma or GED and be 21 years of age. Benefits are included.
  2. Accountant: This job is associated with the Finance Department.
“This position performs essential accounting functions including accounts payable and insures conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Accrual Accounting,” the website states.
Minimum requirements include a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a major in accounting or finance; or four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applications are accepted until July 3 at 5 p.m.
  1. System Engineer: This job is associated with the Electrical Department.
“This position performs professional engineering, construction, maintenance and inspection of electrical distribution and substation facilities and ensures engineering compliance with all applicable codes, regulations standards and specifications pertaining to the Electric System,” the website states.
The requirements are also provided in detail.
“The successful applicant must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and five or more years in the field of electric power line systems is desired,” the website describes. “Applicants for this position must have knowledge of insurance policies and coverage, excellent computer, communication and organizational skills and must be competent in the study, design and construction of all aspects of the electric utility industry.”
Benefits are included and applications are being accepted until the position is filled.

For those needing assistance obtaining a GED, you can reach out to Carter County Schools for resources, or check online for institutions that provide testing for obtaining. One such institution in Elizabethton is Northeast State Community College.
“The purpose of the Adult Education/High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma program is to deliver educational services to adults who are over the age of 17 (unless granted an exception) lacking a high school diploma and no longer under compulsory attendance to public high school,” the school’s website states. “The program covers an eight (8) county area, where adults are assessed to determine their level of education and provided instruction to improve their skills in math, science, social studies, reading, writing and employability.”
