JOHNSON CITY – Hundreds of boy and girl wrestlers gathered Saturday at Science Hill High School for the 2020 TNAAU Region 1 East tournament being wrestled on the mats inside the Hilltopper’s old gym.
With hopes of finishing in the top four of each division laying heavy on the minds of the young wrestlers, the action was fast and furious as a top-four finish would result in a spot at the national AAU wrestling tournament.
The Elizabethton Brawlers participated in the match with three wrestlers taking the mats in three different weight categories.
In the Midget 70 weight class, Elizabethton’s Logan Porter opened the Championship Round facing off with Brody Hill of the Hilltopper Wrestling club.
Porter and Hill battled from the opening handshake eventually evening the score at 6-6 before Hill managed to turn four points on the Brawler wrestler to take a 10-6 decision.
Porter received a bye in Consolation Round 1 before squaring off with Renegade Wrestling Club’s Neil Hatcher in Round 2 of the consolation bracket.
Hatcher worked Porter into pin position as the Brawler wrestler battled to break Hatcher’s hold. Hatcher would prevail with a pinfall at 1:23 of the match.
In Midget 75’s there were only two wrestlers in the class as the Brawler’s Stephen Gorby and TNWA’s Will Anderson hooked up for two matches with Anderson prevailing in both matches giving Gorby a second-place finish for the day.
Heath Whitehead represented the Brawlers in the MS 105 weight class.
In the championship round, Whitehead faced off with Felix Duncan of Hammer Wrestling. Whitehead and Duncan battled hard until Duncan managed to put Whitehead’s shoulders down on the mat for a pinfall at 1:19.
Whitehead received a bye in Round 1 of the Consolation bracket before meeting Brice Lanman of Hardin Valley Middle School in Round 2 of the Consolation.
Both wrestlers went at it with gusto before Lanman earned a tough 12-1 major decision over Whitehead.
