Despite a cancellation one day prior, the Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition continued their weekly series on Wednesday at Sweetsie Treatz.
Dolly Reaves, project coordinator for the organization, said that while the scheduled speaker could not make it, she wanted to keep the consistency of the event going.
“We knew we needed to keep the event going,” she said. “We knew we needed to keep it going and show up, and so I filled in and we decided to keep it relevant to natural health.”
At the event, attendees discussed 14 natural health remedies for ailments like the common cold, sore throats and even bug bites.
“We went over things like honey and lemon juice for a sore throat, chamomile tea for colic and baking soda mixed with water into a paste for bug bites,” said Reaves.
In addition to going over those remedies, Reaves said that the event was engaging with attendees in a conversational style. Those who could not make it to the event will be able to view it online once it is posted.
These weekly events vary in discussions with last week being on midwives and doulas. Reaves said this is for the varying interests of the community.
“You never know what is going to pique someone’s interest,” she said. “We like to provide as many tools as possible for anyone to use. Interested in a profession? We can have folks in that profession come speak about it. Want to reduce the amount of chemicals you clean with? We can have a class about natural cleaners. Want to improve your skills on public speaking? We can teach about that.”
Reaves said that the goal is for these weekly events to catch on by people knowing the exact time and place they will be happening each week to be able to spread the word.
“If they know it happens at the same time each week then they may eventually decide to come to one, and it would be discouraging if someone made that effort and we weren’t there.”
The next event in this weekly series will be taking place March 4 at Sweetsie Treatz at 1 p.m. focusing on mental health in teens and tweens.
“I’d love to see folks excited about the opportunity not just to learn, but to share what they know and perhaps teach a class themselves one week,” said Reaves.
