KINGSPORT – After advancing in the Area 1 girls’ tournament earlier, there was only one more step for the Jr. Lady Cyclones of T.A. Dugger Middle School to take to reach the area championship.
However, this would not be an easy step because the Jr. Lady Cyclones would be matched up against a very talented Ross Robinson Lady Redskins team.
Adding two talented teams with a spot in the championship game on the line almost always equals a high-intensity contest and this proved to be no different Tuesday night.
The Lady Redskins came out of the gate on fire taking advantage of the Jr. Lady Cyclones perimeter defense and making them pay with one deep range shot after another.
The Jr. Lady Cyclones, on the other hand, were unable to find their shot as they trailed 13-3 after the first quarter.
The second quarter started out at a much slower pace than the first as both teams were regaining their composure from the period before.
Halfway through the second, the Lady Redskins offense sparked again but not after the Jr. Lady Cyclones had cut into the deficit with tremendous offense of their own.
Going into the halftime break, the Lady Redskins led T.A. Dugger 24-11.
The second half started as a defensive battle between the two teams but things quickly heated up when the Lady Redskins hit another three to get the momentum going.
But the Jr. Lady Cyclones weren’t giving up yet as the T.A. Dugger offense began working on the lead.
Heading into the final quarter the Jr. Lady Cyclones trailed 38-15.
As time expired on the game clock, it was the Lady Redskins who would advance to the Area 1 Class AAA Championship by a final score of 44-22.
The Lady Redskins were led by Caroline Hill with 14 points. She was followed by Scout Bishop who put up 11 in the win.
For the Jr. Lady Cyclones, Katelyn Nave led the effort with 10 points, while Michelle Shields scored eight points in the game
