Grace Miller is a Senior at Happy Valley High School. She says that she has grown up with high expectations of herself. She stated that she had a great fear of not being remembered in history, afraid of not making enough of an impact on the world.
She went through many phases of wanting to be in different professions. From wanting to be a forensic anthropologist to wanting to be the first female president, she says that she explored them all but nothing seemed right.
However, through many trials and errors, and with the help of teachers and various opportunities, she was able to get on the right path.
“The first day I walked into Honors English 3, I was extremely nervous,” stated Miller. “I had heard all the rumors about how it was the hardest class our school had to offer.
“I didn’t realize walking in that day that I was about to not only make major steps in my career decision but also find one of the best role models in someone I never would have expected, a teacher.
“Even just having one teacher who truly cares for their students’ education outweighs the many who don’t,” Miller continued. “When I was a kid, I was terrified of not making an impact on the world, terrified of leaving this world and my name to be forgotten.
“However, as I grew up, I realized that I didn’t need to be written about in books to make an impact. If I can make an impact on even just one student’s life, I know it will all be worth it.”
Caleb Metros is a Senior at Elizabethton High School. Throughout his academic career at EHS, Caleb has shown himself to be a generous collaborator, critical thinker, and champion of student issues.
For the past two school years, Caleb has been a leader in the Community Improvement classes, helping lead projects to build an all-inclusive playground at Sycamore Shoals State Park, designing a mural for the Douglas Community, and acting as the school archivist.
In his work as archivist, Caleb has helped create a digital archive to preserve school history while also assisting the City Archivist in digitizing community artifacts.
He is a role model for underclassmen and is well respected by all faculty and staff. He will be greatly missed at EHS upon graduation.
He plans to attend Tusculum University in the fall majoring in Museum Studies.
The special guest for the January meeting was Mr. Steve McCauley. McCauley is the Chaplain for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.
