STONEY CREEK- High school basketball action kicked off to an early start this week as many games around the area took place Monday night.

Two teams from around the region, the Johnson County Longhorns and the Unaka Rangers, battled it out in Stoney Creek for the Rangers’ homecoming night.
In the girls’ contest, both teams came out firing on all cylinders and keeping up with each other after every bucket. But after the first quarter, it was the Lady Longhorns in front by a slim 12-11 margin.
The second quarter turned out to be a polar opposite of the first as the Lady Longhorns were able to jump ahead to a 30-21 edge going into the break.
Coming out after halftime, the game once again showed a change of pace. However, this would be a much slower one as both team’s scoring output decreased for most of the quarter. Going into the final quarter, the Lady Longhorns still retained the lead, 42-26.
In the end, the Lady Rangers weren’t able to keep up with the visitors falling in the first game by a score of 55-44.
Sadie Stout led the Lady Longhorns in the scoring column with 22 points followed by Taylor Cox who finished with 14.
In the loss, the Lady Rangers were led by Lyndie Ramsey with 26 points while Macy Ensor finished with six.
In the second contest of the night, the Ranger offense came out in full control as they started the game on a 10-0 run. But soon after, the Longhorns would go on a run of their own, making the score 16-10 in favor of the Rangers after one.
In the second period, momentum belonged to the Rangers as their offense couldn’t be stopped, giving them a 41-16 edge at halftime.
The Longhorns were able to claw back into the game for a while in the third quarter but the Rangers didn’t take their foot off the gas giving them the lead going into the fourth, 46-29.
After it was all said and done, the Longhorns couldn’t catch up to Unaka’s high-powered offense as the Rangers went on to win, 65-52.
Ryan Johnson led the Rangers with 21 points and was followed closely by Will Sexton who finished with 17.
For the Longhorns in the loss, Lucas Phillips scored 18 for his team with Michael Oxentine scoring 14 points.
