Junior Bulldogs dominate Johnson County on Eighth Grade Night

Behind some sharp shooting and tough defense, the Hampton Junior Bulldogs dominated Johnson County Middle School on Thursday night. On Eighth Grade Night the pair of Dylan Trivett and Hayden Campbell combined for 33 points in a 43-27 victory.
Campbell hit for 18 points and 17 rebounds while Trivett scored 15 points and collected six steals.
“Campbell puts in the work,” said Junior Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey. “He can shoot anywhere inside 15-16 feet and Dylan is a gifted athlete who has played a lot of basketball.
“When our defense gets their hands out and reacts to the ball it allows Dylan to sneak in and get steals.”
The Dogs (17-2, 9-0 conference) ran out to a 15-3 first period lead and did not allow the Junior Longhorns to scored double digits in any period.
Hampton led 28-11 at the half allowing JCMS just three baskets in the first half.
The Junior ‘Horns took the third period by an 8-5 tally to cut the HMS lead to 33-19 going into the final stanza. The ‘Dogs opened the fourth quarter with a trey from Michael Anspaugh and a bucket from Campbell and the rout was on.
Connor Simcox led the way for the Longhorns with nine points and seven rebounds with Dalton Pope adding seven points and hit the only trey JCMS managed in this one.

The Lady Junior Bulldogs squandered a 16-10 halftime lead and scored just six points in the entire second half and overtime as JCMS rallied for the win.
“It’s tough for the girls,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Ginny White said. “It’s the first time since I have been here that we have lost on Eight Grade Night, so this is a new one for us. There were a lot of mistakes we need to learn from.”
The Lady ‘Dogs led by seven at 20-13 going into the final period but Johnson County opened the fourth quarter with a seven-point run to tie the game at 20-20.
Lacey Smith hit a bucket from the baseline for Hampton to give the Lady ‘Dogs a two-point lead but Mackenzie Kelly knotted it at 22-22 to force overtime.
In the overtime period, Aubree Glenn hit two free throws and Kelly one and the Lady Junior Longhorns shut the door on Hampton with stout defense and rebounding while Hampton forced up fast and inaccurate shots.
Piper Helle was the top scorer for Hampton with six while Macy Henry and Taylor Berry both had five points before fouling out in regulation. Kelly and Glenn each had eight points for the victorious Longhorns.
