Hampton put a capper on the Holiday season with a sweep of Sullivan North on Friday evening at Van Huss White gymnasium in boys and girls basketball.
The Lady Bulldogs (4-12, 1-1 WVC) got a big game from post Hazen Brumitt in a 38-25 win while the Bulldogs (10-7, 2-0 WVC) simply overpowered the Golden Raiders 81-57.
All 12 of the players that saw action for the ‘Dogs cracked the scoreboard with senior Jordan Bentley leading the way with 13 points. Fellow senior Caleb Oaks and sophomore Conor Jones each added 11 to the blowout win.
“We shared the ball really well tonight with 21 assists,” commented Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith. “I told the boys that any time we get 20 assists in a game we will be very competitive. 17 steals showed we turned defense into offense. We kept subbing because we got some kids with the virus and the bench played well.”
The Raiders (9-6, 1-2) got off to a fast start with an 8-1 opening run but the ‘Dogs answered with 15 consecutive points before a Christian Hill bucket stopped the bleeding for North momentarily.
It got much worse for North in the second period as Hampton outscored the Raiders by six in the second stanza to take a 38-25 halftime advantage.
The ‘Dogs led 59-40 after three quarters were in the books and the writing was on the wall in this contest.
Hampton opened the fourth quarter with a six-point run to open a 65-40 bulge and while North would surge a bit, they never threatened the ‘Dogs lead the rest of the way.
Trey Williams topped the Raiders with 13 points with C.J. Mardis adding 11 and Hill added 10.
“Sullivan North has got some good athletes that are well-coached,” Smith said of North’s opening surge. “We came out a little sluggish at first but our defense kind of stepped up there and we put a lot of pressure on the ball and got some turnovers.”

Brumitt scored a game-high 15 points and got the Lady Bulldogs off to a fast start with a 10-0 run to open the game and opening a 16-7 first period lead.
The Lady ‘Dogs played well defensively holding North to 2-for-11 (18.1 percent) shooting in the opening period.
Hampton raced to a 23-9 halftime lead with guard Hannah Collins scoring eight of her 10 points in the first half.
“This was one of her better games tonight,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Bud Hazelwood said of Brumitt. “She needs it. We got out to an early lead and we shouldn’t overlook anybody.
“We’re playing better but sometimes when you get that early lead you think this will be easy and you lose the big momentum and it is hard to get it back.”
That was not an issue on this night as North simply could not find the range until late in the contest when the Lady Raiders outscored Hampton 9-8 in the final quarter, but the damage had been done by then.
Overall, North (4-7, 1-2) shot 6-for-24 (25 percent) from the floor and were 2-for-8 (25 percent) from long range.
Maddy Winters scored a team-high eight points for North with Lilly Crawford adding seven and Rilee Absher coming off the bench to score five after Winters fouled out with 7:04 remaining in regulation.
