HAPPY VALLEY – Happy Valley High School was the place to be Monday night as two teams from opposite ends of Carter County, the Cloudland Highlanders, and the Happy Valley Warriors, battled it out in a round ball contest.
As is the case for most high school basketball events in Tennessee, the girls teams would get underway first and would be followed by a boy’s contest.
It was an impressive performance by the visitors as the Highlanders would sweep the Warriors in both contests.
The Lady Highlanders came out hot in the first contest as they would go on an 8-2 run to start the game. There wasn’t much more action in the rest of the first, as the Lady ‘Landers would take a 10-4 lead.
Cloudland would keep their momentum all the way to the break as they would take a 24-14 edge into halftime.
The third period was when the Lady Highlanders started to pull away. While the Lady Warriors were able to score early, it wasn’t often as they would only score one point making the score 31-15 in favor of the Lady ‘Landers after three.
The final quarter consisted of an attempt at a comeback by the Lady Warriors but the deficit was too much as Cloudland would win the first game by a score of 45-32.
In the victory for the Lady Highlanders, Jasmine Birchfield led her team in points with 11, followed by Kenzie Birchfield with 8. Mandy Benfield and Heaven Caraway finished with six points each.
For the Lady Warriors in the loss, Kadie Bailey finished with seven points and was followed by Shalyn Whitson and Emily Lunceford, who put up six and five points respectively.
In the boy’s contest, the Highlanders came out hot as they were able to shut down the Warriors offense giving them a 14-4 lead going into the second quarter.
Things went the Warriors way for most of the second quarter as they were able to close the gap to four points. However, Cloudland’s offense was able to come back to life, giving the Highlanders a 35-18 lead going into the halftime break.
The rest of the contest was just a matter of the ‘Landers holding on to an impressive lead they had racked up despite Happy Valley’s attempt at a comeback.
Cloudland would go on to win the boy’s contest by a final of 59-36.
In the win, Conner Birchfield led the Highlanders with 14 points and was followed by Bentley Gilbert with 11 and Elijah Blair with 10.
Landon Babb led the Warriors with 13 points in the loss, followed by Luke Roberts who scored eight points in the contest.
