JOHNSON CITY – With a good portion of its basketball team still playing football the Elizabethton Cyclones took on Knox Bearden on Friday afternoon at Science Hill gymnasium in the Doubletree Roundball Showcase.
The Cyclones (1-2) fell behind early and could muster little offense in a 62-35 loss to the Bulldogs (2-5). Senior post Nico Ashley hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half as he scored 10 first-half points but EHS trailed 32-20 at the break.
“We knew this game would be a tall order with what we have,” said Cyclones head coach Lucas Honeycutt. “We’re missing half our guys and it’s a pretty big distraction and everyone is thinking about the game tomorrow. It’s a really big deal around the school and in the community.”
Bearden outscored the Cyclones 20-6 in the third period and the rout was on from there. Junior William Willocks scored a game-high 11 points for EHS while Bearden post Tyler Nadin put up 17 points including a thunderous dunk off a fast break.
A.J. Pruitt scored 12 points and Caleb Edwards added 10 for the Bulldogs while Ashley and Donte Earnest each had 10 for the Cyclones.

The Lady Cyclones stayed with Bearden for the first four minutes of this one, but the double post attack of Jakhia Davis and Avery Treadwell was too much for the much smaller Cyclones to handle.
Davis scored 19 points but had her way on the boards with 12 rebounds – eight offensive boards – and Treadwell added seven boards.
“We’re missing two kids that play a lot of minutes for us,” said Lady Cyclones head coach Lucas Andrews. “But, that being said we got good minutes from Cheyenne (VanHuss), Renna (Lane) and Morgan (Headrick).
“We knew that they lived off the glass and preached on rebounding all week. You have to be able to rebound with them but we did not do a very good job in the first half.”
Headrick scored 19 points and had a team-high eight rebounds but the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of their rebounding advantage to move to a 36-15 halftime lead. Senior guard Kalen Shell scored four first-quarter points but then lost the range and missed her next six shots and finished with five points.
Freshman Renna Lane scored 10 points with eight coming in the second half including a three-ball. Bearden went on a 16-0 run from the first quarter until junior guard Torrie Roberts stopped the bleeding with a trey making it a 25-9 contest.
Zneyah McLaughlin scored 13 points for the Bulldogs with Emily Gonzalez adding 12 and Jah’niya Bussell scoring 11.
