Tim Nave will be performing at JRH Brewing in Johnson City every Saturday this month.
According to Nave, each week he will have local talent at JRH Brewing, including banjo phenomenon, Zack Vickers, and bassist, Dustin Goff, as well as Overmountain Sound, a folk band Nave is part of. This monthly event is known as “Tim Nave and friends.”
Nave, who is no stranger to the local music scene, has loved and played music for as long as he can remember.
“I think my earliest memory involving music would be something I did multiple times,” he said. “There was an old acoustic guitar in the hallway closet that I would drag into my room. I was too small to hold the instrument so I would lay it on the bed and hit the strings with pencils.”
Nave said his love for music is an emotional one rather than what is, and has been, mainstream.
“I found less mainstream bands like ‘No Use For A Name,’ ‘Thrice’ and ‘Killswitch Engage’ interesting when I was younger,” he said. “The songs sounded angry and pretty at the same time. What would sound like rage at first would end up being inspirational. The vocals sounded like they meant what they were singing. On the other end of the spectrum I could have the same emotional pull by listening to “Rylynn” by Andy Mckee, which is a solo acoustic guitar piece. I’ve found many inspirations over the years.”
Nave, who can play guitar, the bass and drums, in addition to singing, began performing with a praise band at his church when he was 13 before performing with house bands and at youth centers his sophomore year of high school. He has been involved in several bands over the years, including “Search Lights ’Til Sunrise.” He is now a solo act as well as in a folk band called “Overmountain Sound.”
“Overmountain Sound is a newly formed folk trio with members all from Elizabethton,” he said. “Grant Taylor and Caleb Gouge play a variety of instruments along with myself.”
The newly formed band will be performing with Nave at the JRH Brewing on Dec. 14.
He said more can be expected from both him and his band in the future.
“Overmountain Sound has an album that will be tracked in Bristol during the month of December,” he said. “That album will be released at the first of the year, and I’ll be releasing a solo album in the spring.”
For any new artists out there, Nave has some advice.
“Support your locally owned music store,” he said. “Support your local live music scene. If there is not a scene for the genre you are a part of, then create it. Promote your gigs beyond just social media. Be nice to each other.”
