HAMPTON- No game is won until it’s played, but the #9 state-ranked Hampton Bulldogs 6-2 (2-1) had to be feeling pretty good when they hosted the Unaka Rangers 1-7 (0-3) on Friday night.
With two teams trending the opposite direction, the Bulldogs looked to continue their string of total dominance, so that’s exactly what they did rolling the Rangers 64-0.
Receiving the opening kick, the Bulldogs were poised and ready to pounce as a couple of big runs from Isiah Greenwell set up a four-yard touchdown run from Matt Hughes.
The two-point conversion made it 8-0 early for Hampton.
Unaka took the field hoping to get some early offense, but the same Bulldogs defense showed up Friday that showed up a week ago and the Rangers went three and out.
The ground game transitioned smoothly over to the passing game as Conor Jones would find Hayden Birchfield for 14 and the first down.
The very next play Jones would find Caleb Oaks for 17 yards and a touchdown and the Bulldogs led 16-0.
The Rangers would again try their hand on offense with a trio of runs from Logan Benway but the Hampton defense is something fierce.
Another three and out meant more immediate action for the Bulldogs offense.
The offense would not waste time as this time Jones would keep it in the family finding Jonah Jones for the 25-yard score and late in the first, the Bulldogs led 24-0.
A big return from Logan Benway seemed to maybe spark some life into the Rangers but the Hampton defense was having none of it.
Daniel Shearl would come out for the punt and Jones and the Bulldogs offense again got it going.
Matching the speed of their previous drive, Greenwell took the opening play of the drive 60 yards for another score.
Michael Harrison tacked on the extra point and the home team led 31-0 heading into the second quarter.
Unfortunately for Unaka, the second quarter was not so kind to them either as they wouldn’t gain a single first down for the remainder of the half.
The Bulldogs found two more scores on the ground as Oaks found paydirt yet again, and then Matt Hughes punched it in from nine yards out and Hampton led big.
A scoop and score just before the half made the difference 52-0 heading into the break.
The second half was merely a formality as the running clock was the biggest hero of the back half of the game.
The Bulldogs slotted in the backup brigade and gave some big minutes to some younger players who don’t get to see much of the field.
Tristan Lipford broke a 75-yard run for Hampton and then Aiden Vines punched it in for the score giving Hampton another duo of scores bringing the score to its final resting spot, 64-0.
Heading into the season finales for each team, the 9th-ranked Bulldogs will host Cosby while Unaka will head to Sunbright.
