This coming Sunday, October 20th will be a time that the local community and surrounding areas can accomplish two things at one time – enjoy an evening of bluegrass and gospel music and help the Elizabethton Lady Cyclone basketball and softball teams at the same time.

An Evening of Bluegrass and Gospel Music will be presented at the Elizabethton High School gymnasium beginning at 3 pm with festival seating featuring local favorites and national acclaimed Carson Peters and Iron Mountain and Loren Harris & Brotherhood.

Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased from a member of the Lady Cyclone basketball and softball teams or by contacting girls’ softball coach Ken Hardin via email at kenneth.hardin@ecschools.net.

For churches wanting to bring a group, Hardin advised to contact him to receive a group discount.

Coach Hardin said that the concert was a way to allow the community to get something for their money while keeping the girls from doing door to door fundraising which is not advisable to send young ladies out in that manner with the dangers presented.

“Carson is going to play first because he has another appointment that night and then Loren will come out,” said Hardin. “This event is hopefully going to lead to big and better things which could possibly include the Kingdom Heirs or another big contemporary group.

“We are hoping that a lot of people will come out being a Sunday afternoon and the event will be between morning and evening services at their churches. It will be a great time. It’s really a great deal for a concert with tickets being only $10.”

One of the reasons that the two teams are combining is due to the increasing cost of equipment and needs associated with participating in athletics.

“Everything is so expensive now in all sports, just not softball and basketball,” Hardin added. “An example would be the umpires and the referees and you have to pay them and it is expense along with the uniforms and the equipment.

“We want to be as good as we can be and we want the kids to have all they need to be successful. You can see how hard we work by just looking at our facilities on the softball field.”

Peters has been well known throughout the area as well as nationally and internationally since appearing at the Grand Old Opry with Ricky Skaggs, on The Tonight Show, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, Dollywood Bluegrass, and at the 52nd Annual CMA’s held last year.

He also is a student at Elizabethton High School and recently participated in the regional golf tournament representing Elizabethton High as well as participating in the acclaimed EHS Chorale group.

Harris is the former music director at Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church and currently sings full time with the Kingdom Heirs, a group that is in their 34th season at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge.

Hardin expressed an invitation to everyone to come out and enjoy a time of great music and to support both teams for the upcoming season.
