JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University’s Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will perform in concert on Thursday, Oct. 17.

In “Folk Songs,” each ensemble will present a concert program featuring music containing folksong melodies in the composition. Pieces will include “American Riversongs” by Pierre La Plante, “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst and “Southern Harmony” by Donald Grantham.

Also included on the program is the performance of “Echoes of 1869” by Dr. Joe D. Moore, assistant professor and director of athletic bands in the ETSU Department of Music. This three-movement suite was commissioned by the Johnson City Community Concert Band (JCCCB) to commemorate the Johnson City Sesquicentennial. The piece, which the JCCCB premiered in July, contains a number of folk songs and popular tunes that would have been familiar to Johnson City residents at the time of the city’s founding.

The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Christian Zembower, professor and director of bands in the ETSU Department of Music, and the ETSU Concert Band is conducted by Moore.

The free public concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Seeger Chapel on the campus of Milligan College.
