Teams converge on Elizabethton Golf Course for prep match

With district and regional play coming up in the next couple of weeks, local prep golf teams are not allowing the heat deter them from getting in some final match play against some of the same opponents they will be facing in tournament action.
On Wednesday at Elizabethton Golf Course, five boy’s teams and four girls teams hooked up for a spirited round of golf on a hot, sultry afternoon.
When the final group had come into the clubhouse, the Sullivan South Lady Rebels had run away with the team competition firing a sparkling 76 over nine holes led by an outstanding effort from Kara Carter and Erin Musick who fired rounds of 37 and 39 respectively.
The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones finished second behind South with Hannah Williams and Katelyn Kechter leading the charge with a 45 and 47 for the round.
Unaka (104) and Hampton (108) finished third and fourth respectively on the girl’s side of play.
In boys action, Hampton slide past Elizabethton by the slimmest of margins as the Bulldogs with a team 164 edged the Cyclones who had finished with a team round of 165.
Mitchell Tolley led the ‘Dogs efforts with a 40 while RJ Tolley and Izaak Hill had identical rounds of 41. Josh Owens added a 42 to make up Hampton’s 164.
Carson Peters continues to play lights-out golf for the Cyclones as his 36 was good enough to take the medalist award for the day and to lead the Cyclones to their finish.
Cooper Tipton (42), Padraig Murphy (43), and Brayden Phillips (44) closed out the day in making up the four-man team score.
Sullivan South finished with a 190 and Johnson County closed out with a 192. Unaka had three players so they could not qualify for a team score that requires four scores.
