Hampton Christian Church is 177 years old, tracing its history back to 1842.
Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, the church’s current minister, states, “The origin of the church dates back to 1842 when the congregation assembled under the name of Mount Pleasant and first met in the home of John Hill in Tiger Valley. In 1882-1883 the Old Rock church was built and took on its new name, Hampton Christian Church. The church moved to its present location on Jan. 2, 2000.”
Calhoun and his wife, the former Anna Barnett, have been married for more than 30 years and have two daughters.
Calhoun says the church offers “an array of men’s, women’s, and youth ministries.” An independent Christian congregation, Hampton Christian Church is located at 810 Deerfield Lane, Hampton.
Calhoun describes his preaching style as being “one verse at a time, since every verse is inspired and important.”
Proverbs 3:6 is Calhoun’s favorite passage from which to preach. “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Jeremiah McClain is the associate minister of youth at Hampton Christian Church.
Sunday’s schedule is as follows: Coffee, donuts, and fellowship, 9:45 a.m.; Sunday school, 10 a.m.; worship, 10:45 a.m.; SLAM (youth), 5:30 p.m.; Sunday evening Bible study (adults), 6 p.m. Wednesday Prayer and Bible study for all ages begins at 7 p.m.
Hampton Christian Church publishes a weekly church bulletin and a monthly newsletter. According to the church’s website, its motto is “Where Jesus is Lord (worship); The Bible is preached (discipleship); People are loved, (fellowship); Work is enjoyed (ministry); and Lives are changed (evangelism) forever!” The model for the motto is shown in Acts 2:42-47.
The website also states the church’s mission: “We want the community to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ through out evangelism; the crowd to participate in worship services; the congregation to enjoy fellowship with one another; be committed to study God’s Word in discipleship; and the core to seek opportunities to serve in ministry. Our goals are that individuals at each audience level will mature to the next level and that Christ be exalted in all we do.”
