In 25 all-time meetings with Happy Valley, Chuckey-Doak has managed just three wins. On Thursday night on Warrior Hill, it would not be a fourth as the Warriors pulled out a 14-6 penalty plagued victory.
A total of 22 penalties flags were thrown making the action on the field a stop and go affair with the Warriors accumulating 121 penalty yards, something that did not make head coach Jason Jarrett a happy man.
“I don’t understand how we could look so undisciplined,” Jarrett said. “It’s absolutely embarrassing. We had hardly any penalties last week and this week we had all these penalties.
“We are going to learn how to play the game the right way. That’s on me. But, I’m proud of my guys, we’re 2-0 and I’ll take that.”
The Warriors (2-0) second possession began with a big play – a 32-yard pass completion from senior quarterback Noah Stevens to sophomore Andrew Little – and HV capped its drive with a six-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Matthew Bahn.
Cameron Cochran kicked the point after to stake the Warriors to a 7-0 lead.
That lead would hold through the first half as neither team could move the ball offensively as flags flew on nearly every other play and continuity became impossible for either squad.
The third period opened with much of the same as the Black Knights (0-2) moved to the HV 23-yard line on a smart-looking drive that started at the 43-yard line.
Junior quarterback Matthew Palazzo completed passes of 13, 16, 6 and 12 yards to various receivers but his last pass of 12 yards to Colin West fell short of a first down and the Knights turned it over on downs.
HV took over at the 20-yard line and Stevens completed a 21-yard strike to senior Will Tittle on the first play of the drive.
The second play was a 33-yard toss to Little to move HV to the C-D 27-yard line. His third straight completion went for 15 yards to Tittle to move to the Knights 12-yard line.
Bahn scored on a seven-yard dash in which he hurdled a C-D defender near the line of scrimmage and scooted down the visitor’s sideline to pay dirt.
Cochran’s kick was partially blocked but managed to limp over the crossbar for a 14-0 Warrior lead.
“We had some chunk plays and that’s good,” Jarrett said. “But we also had some missed opportunities. We have got to get it figured out how we can look so undisciplined and clean up our miscues.”
Late in the third period, Stevens was sacked on back to back plays and lost a fumble to Chuckey-Doak LB Seth Shelton at the HV 45-yard line.
The Black Knights drove the 45 yards – aided by a pair of HV personal foul penalties – and junior RB Evan Murvin scored on a four-yard run.
The point-after try was blocked and C-D had to settle for a 14-6 deficit with 11:54 remaining in the contest.
HV punted on its next two possessions and C-D went out on downs in between and on their third possession of the period a sack by HV’s Kamden Richardson caused another turnover on downs for the Knights.
HV ran out the last 1:22 on the clock to secure the win.
