JOHNSON CITY — The Department of Theatre and Dance at East Tennessee State University has unveiled its 2019-20 season. All shows will be performed in the Bud Frank Theatre.

“Waiting for Godot” will open the season and will run Oct. 3-6. Written by Samuel Beckett, the show introduces two men, Vladimir and Estragon, who meet near a tree while endlessly waiting for the arrival of someone named Godot. The ETSU production is directed by faculty members Melissa Shafer and Dr. Katherine Weiss, with Logan Carson as stage manager.

Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s beloved play “You Can’t Take It With You” tells the story of young Alice Sycamore. After becoming engaged to the vice president where she works, Alice decides to introduce her fiancé to her wacky family who clearly march to the beat of their own drums. Among the eccentric members of the Sycamore/Vanderhof family is Grandpa, who will be played by ETSU professor and well-known actor Patrick Cronin making his return to the stage. “You Can’t Take It With You” runs Nov. 21-24 and will be directed by Bobby Funk and stage managed by Kate Patton.

The Sophocles tragedy “Antigone” takes stage Feb. 20-23 under the direction of Herb Parker. Written around 441 B.C.E., “Antigone” tells of a young woman whose brother, Polynices, has been killed on the Thebes battlefield. When the rules decide that as punishment Polynices’ body will remain unburied on the battlefield and not sanctified by holy rites, Antigone decides to bury him herself but is later caught. Kallie Jenkins will stage manage this newly translated production by Anne Carson.

Concluding the 2019-20 season will be “Bridge to Terabithia,” directed and choreographed by Cara Harker with musical direction by Dr. Brad Fugate and stage managed by Logan Carson. Two young children — Jess, the rural boy who aspires to be the fastest runner in his class, and Leslie, the new girl from the city who captures the title from him — create Terabithia, a secret hideaway spot in the woods where they feel safe from those who do not understand them. “Bridge to Terabithia” is written by Katherine Paterson and Stephanie S. Tolan with music by Steve Liebman. Show dates are April 19-22 with school performances available.

The design teams for the 2019-20 season are Jonathon Taylor, Andrea Greer and Matt Stevans (scenic design); Beth Skinner and Jessica Richardson (costume design); Melissa Shafer, Levi Bradford and Matt Stevens (lighting design); Zach Olsen and Dylan Weston (technical direction); and Braylee Polson (hair and makeup design).
