Donald and his wife Donna were among the most patriotic members of the church they attended.
Every year on the Fourth of July, the couple planned and hosted an “Independence Day Celebration” at the church. Donald and Donna planned plenty of patriotic/worship music and provided a wide assortment of treats and snacks for attendees.
Donald baked a huge variety of fried apple pies. “These pies are made from the same recipe my grandma used to bake her pies,” he bragged. “Grandma surely lives on through these sweet delicacies.”
Donna provided a variety of goodies for the celebrations, from lime meringue pie and triple chocolate cake to strawberry shortcake extraordinaire. “My mother was definitely an expert at satisfying a person’s sweet tooth,” she explained. “And mom passed her rare baking skills down to me.”
Just as Donald and Donna had been blessed by the Lord with an ability to satisfy the community’s sweet tooth, area residents felt they had been blessed with a special gift of consuming these original and delightful treats. “Donald’s fried apple pies are the best in the entire state,” Dean confidently told Deana, his wife. “He uses just the right combination of brown sugar and cinnamon to bring out the taste in the apples, and the flaky crust simply melts in my mouth!”
Deana was just as impressed with Donna’s desserts. “I could eat one of her delicacies for dessert for breakfast, a second for dessert following lunch and a third dessert after dinner,” Deana said. “She is so good at baking desserts, I’m going to suggest that she open a school for people who want to learn how to bake desserts.”
Word about Donald and Donna’s baking expertise soon came to the attention of Dylan, the owner of a local TV station. Dylan invited the couple to begin a program on the station to share their information with the community. The daily 30-minute program was welcomed by area residents with open minds and hearts.
Every Friday, viewers were allowed to call with comments and/or questions about the program and about Donald and Donna’s recipes. One Friday, a man named Dana called. “Why do you think you and your husband have such a gift for baking and satisfying the community’s sweet tooth?” asked Dana.
“I’m not sure,” Donna responded. “I think it must go back to the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve were able to eat the wide variety of fruits. I think they must have gotten addicted to all the natural sugars in the fruits and this natural addiction just kept on spreading down through the years. That must be why we’re all so naturally sweet!”
