2019 Junior Ranger Camp — Daily Times TBD — Roan Mountain State Park is proud to host our 2019 Junior Ranger Camp for youth ages 8-12. Junior Rangers will participate in outdoor activities and classes while learning the many duties of a park ranger: wilderness medicine and survival, law enforcement, plant and animal identification, and outdoorsmanship. At the end of their week, 30 Junior Rangers will graduate with their very own Junior Ranger Badge. 

This year’s classes will be held the week of June 8-12 (Monday – Friday). A graduation ceremony and dinner will be held on Friday. Due to over-whelming demand, registration was held in-person only on Saturday, May 4, at the Park Headquarters starting at 4 p.m. Registration may only be done for family-members of the person registering them. Lastly, Junior Ranger who have completed two years at Roan Mountain State Park will not be eligible for registration (though many other TN State Parks offer excellent Junior Ranger Camps). Junior Rangers, get ready for an exciting year! Registration at Park Headquarters.

Owl Feeding – 7:30-8:00 p.m. – Join Park Ranger Keifer Helle at the Aviary located next to the Park Headquarters. We will learn about the types of owls found in this area and observe their eating behavior.

Summer Concert Series: Bandwagon Fallacy – 7:30-8:30 p.m. – This groovy band hails from just over the mountain in Buladean, NC.  Bandwagon Fallacy rocks the house with old-time favorites and touching originals from classic rock, country, folk and soul. 7:30-8:30 PM at the Park Amphitheater. ** Concerts will be relocated to Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground in case of bad weather. Junior Bigfoot Hike – 9-10 p.m. – Attention Junior Bigfoot Hunters!Join Park Ranger Keifer Helle at the Camper Check-In Station to go on a short hike on the Tom Gray trail in search of the infamous Bigfoot. This program costs $10.00 per kid and is limited to only 20 spots! You can register online or by contacting the Park Headquarters. There is no charge for Parent’s / Guardians accompanying their Junior Bigfoot Hiker. Meet at: Park Headquarters

All Day Outdoor Photography Workshop Adventure – 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Join David Duplessis of Tennessee Photographs and a Park Ranger for an amazing ALL-DAY photography workshop through Roan Mountain State Park! The photographic opportunities are almost endless from the gorgeous arboreal forests, trails and rivers, to the mountain views and idyllic valleys there’s beautiful scenery every where you look.After the workshop is over (around 1pm), we’ll caravan up to the top of Roan Mountain to enjoy the Cloudland Trail & Rhododendron Garden.Plan to meet at the Gristmill Visitors Center at 7:45 a.m. the workshop will start promptly at 8 a.m. We will caravan & hike around the park to different points of interest through out the day, like:

– Peg Leg Mine & Trail

– Cloudland Trail

– The Doe River

– Miller Homestead (where we’ll picnic)

– Chestnut Ridge Overlook

– Riverside Trail

– And more!

Please bring your DSLR & lenses*. There will be hiking involved (some short but strenuous bursts in places) so please bear that in mind and wear appropriate clothing & shoes**. Also, be sure to bring plenty of water/fluids as well as your own snacks & lunch.

*All you really need to bring with you is your favorite camera and a sense of adventure. But…you are also encouraged to bring a tripod/monopod, shutter release, your collection of lenses, filters, etc., Basically, bring what YOU want to use and are comfortable with!

**The top of Roan Mountain can be significantly cooler and wetter then the valley below, it’s fun and unpredictable that way.  So there is a possibility you and your gear might get wet. So please be aware of that, and pack accordingly.

Brownie Nature Adventure Badge Workshop – 9 a.m. – 12 Noon – Brownie Scouts are welcomed to join Roan Mountain State Park on Friday, July 19th, 2019 for a Nature Adventure Badge Workshop.  24 scouts will work alongside park rangers from 9AM till 12PM to earn their Brownie 1st Aid and Hiking Badges while also working towards earning their Eco-Friends badge.  Registration is limited to 24 Brownie Scouts at a cost of $5.00 per scout for the day. 

Friday, July 19th Brownie Scout Day (Grades 2-3) – Limited to 24 Scouts

9:00AM: Check-in at Park Restaurant Building above Cabins 1-20 (Parking at cabin parking lot)

9:30AM – 10:30AM: Brownie 1st Aid – Brownies will work alongside Park Rangers to learn the importance of outdoor safety, how to get help from 911, and how to help treat minor injuries. (Earns the Brownie 1st Aid Badge)10:30AM – 11:30AM: 10 Essentials Hike – Every Girl Scout should know what to pack for an outdoor hike.  Learn from someavid hikers what to pack while on an outdoor adventure then take a small 0.5 mile hike along the Cabin Connector trail. (Earns the Hiking Badge) 11:30AM – Noon: Eco-Friends – Nature is an enjoyable place to play, but we have to take care of it.  Learn the basics of caring for the great outdoors so everyone else may enjoy it.  (Meets each requirement except the “Safely make a campfire” requirement) Noon: Girl Scout Check-out at the Restaurant Building. Meet at: Old Restaurant Building above Cabins.

Summer Concert Series: The Roan Crows – 7:30-8:30 p.m. – Rock out with The Roan Crows as they dish out crowd-pleasing favorites from 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s rock and roll classics.  These guys are loads of fun, don’t miss ‘em! 7:30-8:30 PM at the Park Amphitheater. ** Concerts will be relocated to Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground in case of bad weather.FREE ADMISSION!  Donations accepted. Evening Snake Tour – 8-9:30 p.m. – Ever wanted to learn more about the many secretive snakes of Tennessee?  Meet Park Ranger Philip Hylen at 8:00PM on Friday, July 19th for an unforgettable snake adventure at the park Visitor Center.  Participants will start with a live-snake experience before setting off for a brief snake and nght-time wildlife tour around the Visitor Center and Cloudland Nature Trail.  Be sure to bring along hiking shoes and a good flash light or headlamp. This program is free, but limited to 12 people. This program will begin on the Visitor Center front porch.

Junior Scout Nature Adventure Badge Workshop – 9 a.m. – 12 Noon – Junior Scouts are welcomed to join Roan Mountain State Park on Saturday, July 20th, 2019 for a Nature Adventure Badge Workshop.  32 scouts will work alongside park rangers from 9AM till 12PM to earn their Junior 1st Aid, Detective, and Flower Badges.. Visit our park website to register your scout from May 1 – July 10.  Registration is limited to 32 Junior Scouts at a cost of $5.00 per scout for the day.  Saturday, July 20th : Junior Scout Day (Grades 4-5) – Limited to 32 Scouts

10:30 – Noon: Junior Park Detectives – Juniors will work towards their Detective and Flower Badges while exploring a natural and historical mystery unique to Roan Mountain.  Scouts should be ready to run and play as well as take part in a 0.5 mile nature hike.  (Earns the Flower and Detective Badges)

Noon: Girl Scout Check-out at the Restaurant Building. Meet at:Old Restaurant Building above Cabins.

Doe River Snorkeling Excursion – 3-5 p.m. – Join in a high-elavation snorkeling adventure with Park Ranger Phil Hylen along the Doe River at 3:00PM on Saturday, July 20th.  Starting with a intro snorkeling lesson at the Visitor Center, the excursion will lead up the Doe River with various swim holes to explore local fish, crawfish, insects, salamander, and more!  Your findings will help determine the health of the Doe River and any new species will be recorded. Be sure to bring close-toed water shoes to protect your feet.  Wet suits are not required, but average water temperatures can be below 60 degrees F. This adventure is limited to 12 people ages 12+.  The cost per person is $8.00.  Masks and snorkels will be provided to participants, but you are welcome to bring your own.  Meet at the front porch of the Visitor Center to begin.

Summer Concert Series: The Blairs – 7:30-8:30 p.m. – This family gospel group hails from Nebo, NC. Troy and Linda Blair perform both standard hymns and original praise songs sure to make you smile. 7:30-8:30 PM at the Park Amphitheater.** Concerts will be relocated to Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground in case of bad weather.FREE ADMISSION!  Donations accepted.

Sunday, July 21

Gilr Scout Service Project Day – 1-4 p.m. – :00PM – 4:00PM: Wildflower Field Restoration Project – Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts are welcome back to join park rangers in a volunteer work project.  Volunteers will help clear non-native privet from pollinator gardens planted along the park.  Meet at the Park Visitor Center to begin and be sure to bring water.  Work gloves will be provided by the park.  Parents are welcome to join and volunteer as well.  This is a follow-up to the weekend badge workshops and all participants are welcome to join us for this volunteer project.

Friday, July 26, – Saturday, July 27

Xtreme Roan Adventures Youth Rally — 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. — The Friends of Roan Mountain will be hosting an adventurous weekend for youth ages 4+. On July 26 and 27, Junior Naturalists will take part in outdoor nature classes, hikes, and adventures. Friday night classes will begin at 6 p.m. and Saturday events will take place from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For event details and registration information, keep an eye on the Friends of Roan Mountain Website at  http://www.friendsofroanmtn.org/. Lunch will be provided on Saturday for registered individuals. Meet at the Park Amphitheater.

Friday, Aug. 30 – September 1

2019 Fall Naturalists’ Rally – Celebrating their 57th Fall Naturalists Rally, the Friends of Roan Mountain will be offering a weekend full of outdoor classes on varying subjects. Take part in hikes, biotic surveys, naturalist lectures, and outdoor adventures that the whole family can enjoy. This event will take place within Roan Mountain State Park on the weekend of August 30 – September 1. Meet at RMSP Conference Center.

Saturday, Oct. 5

Fall Chili Cook-Off – 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. — Cook up a pot of your secret recipe and compete for prizes, or just come sample the chefs’ creations! Everyone is welcome to kick-off the fall season with food, fun, and fellowship. Register prior to October 5 at the Park Headquarters or Campground Check-in Station. 8:00 a.m.-noon. Prizes will be awarded to the judges favorite chili, public favorite chili, best decorated chili booth, and overall best use of heat to flavor ratio (no burning off taste-buds!). Meet at: Picnic Shelter #3 in Campground.

Saturday, Oct. 12

2019 Autumn Harvest Festival – Noon – 3 p.m. — Step back in time with us on Saturday, October 12th at the Miller Farmstead from noon-3 p.m. Our Autumn Harvest Festival brings guests back into the mid 1800s with historical tours of the Farm, house, and land surrounding the area. The farmstead will be packed with historical demonstrations, games, traditional music, food, crafts, and more! Come out and support these local artists and re-enactors, or join in the fun by calling us to sign up as a vendor or re-enactor today. 

In case of bad weather, the festival will be moved to the Visitor’s Center. If the festival will be moved, we will post it on our park Facebook page and have a sign re-directing guests from the Farmstead entrance. Meet at: Miller Farmstead.

Saturday, Nov. 2

Roan Mountain 10K Road Race – 11 a.m – Compete with runners from across the state as part of the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour. This certified 6.2 mile course is an all road (no trail!) race starting at 11 a.m. at Picnic Shelter 3. Saturday, Nov. 9

Old Time Yule Celebration – 1-3 p.m – Celebrate Christmas with Roan Mountain State Park from 1-3 p.m. at the historic Miller Farmstead. This 1800s Christmas celebration will feature old-time traditional Christmas music, cookies and refreshments, a campfire, tours of the historic farmstead, and an old-timey letter writing station to Santa. 

In case of bad weather, this event may be moved to the Conference Center. If the event will be moved, notice will be given on our Facebook Page and a sign redirecting traffic from the Farmstead entrance will be posted. Meet at: Miller Farmstead.
