Dorothy Marie Sluder Winters

Dorothy Marie Sluder Winters, 87, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 2, 2019, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Dorothy was born in Avery County, N.C., to the late Ernest and Kate McGee Sluder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Amy Winters and Diane Winters; a half brother, Billy Cole; and a son-in-law, Calvin Winters.
Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church. She loved to work in her flowers and being with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David Carl Winters, of the home; one son, Bruce Winters and wife JoAnn of Roan Mountain; four daughters, Carol Winters of Elk Park, N.C., Connie Shell and her life partner Johnny of Roan Mountain, Teresa Sluder and husband Rick of Newland, N.C., and Barbara Shell and husband Rick of Roan Mountain; 10 grandchildren, Christy Winters, Perry Winters, Adam Winters, Aaron Winters, David Shell, Josh Shell, Allen Sluder, Jessica Long, Melissa Sluder and Matt Sluder; nine great-grandchildren, Hunter Shell, Chase Shell, Eilidh Winters, Eli Winters, Ryder Long, Taylor Long, Gavyn Shell, Parker Shell and Alexis Shell; one sister, Anna Lane and husband Curtis of Newland, N.C.; and a special niece, Gail Crawford Pritchard of Beech Mountain, N.C. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Dorothy Marie Sluder Winters will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Kim Church. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at the homes of any family members at other times. The graveside service will follow in the Winters Family Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be David Shell, Josh Shell, Allen Sluder, Aaron Winters, Adam Winters, Perry Winters, Adam Long and Matthew Sluder.
