Hampton sinks teeth in Blue Devils for pair of wins

Hampton and Unicoi County squared off in a non-conference tilt in games that were moved up a couple of days from Monday due to the impending forecast for a snowstorm. It turned out to be an avalanche for the Bulldogs who swept over the Blue Devils in a pair of varsity basketball wins.

Unicoi Co. …..49

The Lady Bulldogs got things off and rolling with a thrilling one-point victory that came down to the game’s final seconds as Hampton managed to ice the win, 50-49.

Hampton gained control of the game in the first 16 minutes of action building a 24-19 advantage behind the hot play of senior Stephanie Campbell who set the nets on fire with 12 points in the first half.

Campbell recorded two treys in the half. Senior Leanne Guinn played a contributing role with six points in the half with Haley Guinn adding 4 points.

Allee Griffith scored eight points for Unicoi County with Kaylee Hendrickson and Caroline Podvin adding a deep trey as well.

Unicoi Co. came out the aggressor in the second half as the five-point lead dwindled to only two points at the end of the third quarter, 36-34.

Chloe Powers and Griffith scored 6 points each to help the Lady Blue Devils narrow the gap. Guinn and Hazen Brummit tickled the twine for 6 points each to make sure the Lady Bulldogs held onto their slim advantage.

With fans on the edge of their seats, the Lady Bulldogs withstood a couple of Unicoi Co. shots that were off the mark to stave off the Lady Blue Devils and log the win.

Campbell led all scorers with 22 points for Hampton in the win. Guinn and Brummit also reached double-digit scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Haley Carden (4) and Brooke Hughes (2) added to the Hampton victory as well.

Griffith finished with 20 points to show the way for the Lady Blue Devils. Powers finished with 11 points.

The Bulldog boys made it a clean sweep in varsity play by downing the Blue Devils by a 69-61 score.

Hampton clung to a thing three-point lead at the break, 33-30, as Conor Jones and Rocky Croy pelted the basket for 7 points each to allow the ‘Dogs to seize the edge.

Matt Hughes dropped in 5 points to contribute to the Hampton lead.

Brett Lingerfelt was dropping bombs in the opening half for Unicoi Co. hitting four treys for 12 points to keep the Blue Devils competitive.

The Bulldogs rode a big fourth quarter to the win behind Jordan Bentley’s 13 points in the final eight minutes of action.

Bentley led the Bulldogs with 23 points in the victory with 23 points. Croy reached double figures with 11 points for the ‘Dogs as well. Conor Jones finished with 7 points

Morgan Lyons and Caleb Oaks fired in six points each for Hampton while a trio of players added five points including Jonah Jones, Hughes, and Izaak Hill.

Garrett Vines collected one point.

Lingerfelt led all scorers with 33 points in the contest with 27 of the 33 coming from behind the arc hitting 9 treys. Brock Thompson added 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Hampton plays host to the Unaka Rangers on Friday.
