Food for the Multitude will sponsor a Harvest Cornbread and Chili Dinner and Bake Sale from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elizabethton.
The menu will include homemade chili with a chili bar, homemade cornbread, cookies and drinks. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Also, homemade goods can be purchased separately as well.
The dinner is the major fundraiser for the year for Food for the Multitude, which provides meals for those in need every Saturday. It’s made of different church groups in the area. Participating churches include Blue Springs Christian, Church of the Nazarene, First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, Memorial Presbyterian, Southside Christian, and St. Thomas Episcopal.
As many as 200 to 250 people are served meals every Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the TLC Center at 145 Don Lewis Road in Elizabethton.
Organizers don’t want people to leave with just a warm meal, but they want the people served to know they care about them.
The program was started in 1985 and for many years the meals were served out of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Initially, the people who came for meals ate in, however, today, the majority prefer carry-out.
Early Saturday morning, volunteers from the local churches participating take their turns dishing up meals. Each church is responsible for the main entree, bread and dessert. Vegetables, fruits and serving trays are all provided through the Food for the Multitude Council budget.
