BLUFF CITY—The Lady Cyclones got District 1-AA Tournament play started out on a good note Monday.
Behind a 91 percent serving percentage, Elizabethton stayed consistent as they topped Chuckey-Doak 3-0 during the first round of the Three River Conference tournament at Sullivan East High School.
Elizabethton senior Sydney Goodsell led the way with six aces while teammates Morgan Smith and Mattie Davis each had five aces each. Davis and Lady Cyclone Deanna Hull finished the night going 100 percent from the service line. Elizabethton’s Josie Lyons had an ace while serving in eight straight serves during Set 2.
“Volleyball is such a game of momentum that if you keep getting your serves in and keep putting the pressure on the other team, then you are always giving yourself a better chance,” said Elizabethton head coach Leslee Bradley. “That is important, and we were able to do that tonight.
“We were serving tough, and Chuckey-Doak was having trouble putting anything together,” added Bradley.
Picking up a decisive 3-0 win in the quarterfinals is big for momentum, said Bradley.
“You want to come out the first night and take care of business and move on,” said Bradley. “Doesn’t matter how pretty it is, but 3-0 is a good win. Now, we just have to get focused on tomorrow.”
Smith led the Lady Cyclones’ offensive attack with eight kills while putting up ten assists. Lyons played a big part in the Elizabethton offense with 13 assists.
Along with her performance at the service line, Goodsell also had five kills and 12 digs on the night. As the libero, Hull had 16 digs. Kallista DePrimo, who also had six kills, followed up with eight digs.
At the net, Smith, and Davis each had two blocks.
Tuesday night, the Lady Cyclones took on Sullivan Central in the semifinals. Elizabethton swept the Lady Cougars in the regular season, and a win in Tuesday night’s match would earn Elizabethton a spot in the district finals and a berth into the Region 1-AA tournament.
