A Roan Mountain man charged in connection with a child sexual abuse case entered a guilty plea in Carter County Criminal Court on Monday and received a 15-year prison sentence.
David Harmon, 47, of Roan Mountain, entered a guilty plea to continuous sexual abuse of a child as part of a plea agreement with the District Attorney’s Office on Monday. Judge Stacy Street ordered Harmon to serve 15 years in prison and ordered him to have no contact “of any kind” with the victim in the case. Under state law, Harmon will have to serve 100 percent of his sentence and is not eligible for parole. Harmon will be required to register as a sex offender following his release from prison.
The charges against Harmon stem from an investigation by the Carter County Sheriff’s Office into allegations that Harmon sexually abused a 7-year-old child multiple times between January 2016 and July 2016.
A Carter County Grand Jury indicted Harmon in January 2017 on 13 counts of rape of a child and 13 counts of incest. According to court documents, Harmon confessed to sexually abusing the child during an interview with officers during the investigation.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, the state dismissed the original indictment against Harmon, and he entered a guilty plea to a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.
Harmon has been incarcerated at the Carter County Detention Center since his arrest in July 2016. On Monday, Street signed an order directing the Carter County Sheriff’s Department to transport Harmon to the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
