Local man arrested near Tweetsie Trail for public intoxication

An Elizabethton man was arrested Wednesday, June 27, in the area of Legacy Drive, near the Tweetsie Trail, and charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication and resisting arrest by the Elizabethton Police Department.

Michael McCool, 43, of 952 Hwy. 91 in Elizabethton, was reportedly hitting cars with a hat when they drove by when EPD made their way to the scene, according to the department’s report.

In the report issued by Officer Lance Peters, after contact was made with McCool, signs were noticed of intoxication. The report indicated that McCool was ask to step off his bicycle, which he was riding multiple times, and refused. Peters reportedly began to frisk McCool for officer safety and asked him to remove his backpack, which he refused to do.

According to the report, “Mr. McCool then began to ball his fists and raise his arms towards officers then attempted to walk away.”

After continual refusal of officer orders, McCool was assisted to the ground by officers, according to the report, in which he continued to resist arrest.

“A male subject identified as Brandon Freeman witnessed the event. Mr. Freeman advised officers Mr. McCool had come to him and attempted to push his daughter away from him in a stroller prior to officers’ arrival,” Peters stated in the report.

The investigation is ongoing.
