Election Commission certifies primary results, looks to August General Election
Published 3:50 pm Monday, May 14, 2018
Members of the Carter County Election Commission voted Monday morning to certify the results from the recent County Primary Election and forward those results on to the state.
During the discussion on the recent election, members of the Election Commission asked Carter County Administrator of Elections Tracy Harris about voter turnout, which she said was around 29 percent for the May Primary. That level of turnout is “about average” for a County Primary Election, according to Harris.
“There will be more voting in the General Election in August,” Harris said. “People don’t understand how important the Primary is. They figure ‘I’ll just vote in the General,’ but their person may not make it to the General.”
The Election Commission also voted to certify the list of candidates who qualified to run as independents in the August County General Election.
Among the independent candidates qualifying for the August ballot are those seeking election to four seats on the Carter County Board of Education. Those races do not appear on the Primary Election ballot because the Board of Education is a non-partisan election.
Several of those seeking county offices that won the Republican Primary on May 1 will be moving on to the August 2 General Election unopposed while others will be facing challenges in the second round.
