Lady Highlanders drop contest to North Greene

A slow night at the plate would be the undoing for the Cloudland Lady Highlanders.

The Lady ‘Landers dropped into the losers’ bracket after falling to North Greene, 9-2, during the District 1-A softball tournament in Stoney Creek Monday.

“We didn’t put together enough hits tonight,” said Cloudland head coach Matt Birchfield. “Their pitching did a good job. They hit us well early. They scored six runs right off the bat and got us down. We really couldn’t generate enough at the plate to do what we needed to do.”

The Lady Huskies didn’t waste any time as they posted six runs in the first inning.

The contest went scoreless for the next three innings before Cloudland’s Gracie Freeman scored on an RBI single by teammate Krisi Bare to cut North Greene’s led to four runs.

Cloudland scored one last time in the sixth as Lady Highlander Jasmine Birchfield scored off a sacrifice play by teammate Leah Birchfield.

North Greene found enough momentum to post three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the game its final tally.

The Lady Highlanders will now take on U-H in the losers’ bracket Tuesday.
