Investigators with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the discovery of two bodies over two days.
On Sunday, a body was discovered in the Watauga River and the Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help with the investigation into the discovery.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, around 1:15 p.m. on Sunday deputies were called to investigate the possible discovery of a body in the Watauga River near Sycamore Shoals Drive.
When deputies arrived, they found the body of a white male, who they believe to have been in the river for some time, according to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators are working to identify the body and establish a cause of death. The body has been sent to ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine for an autopsy.
“We are 99 percent sure we know who it is, but due to the decomposition of the body we are going to have to wait for confirmation through DNA or dental records,” Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford said.
If anyone has any information about this case, they are asked to call Carter County Sheriff’s Office investigators at 423-542-1896.
On Monday, deputies responded to the discovery of another body, this time in the woods behind Pine Ridge Circle.
Lunceford said the body of a male was found inside a cave in the woods.
“It appears to be a suicide,” Lunceford said.
Authorities have identified the subject but have not yet released the name. Lunceford said the man had previously been reported missing to the Elizabethton Police Department.
