The final results of one congressional race has a local political party looking forward to the upcoming election cycle.
According to national reports Wednesday afternoon, Democrat Conor Lamb announced his opponent, Republican Rick Saccone, officially conceded just eight days after a special election for the 18th House Congressional District in Pennsylvania.
In what has been heavily-touted as a red state, Pennsylvania was one of the key states that helped Republican President Donald Trump pick up the 2016 presidency in the general election against Hillary Clinton. With the recent change in attitude and the House seat moving toward the blue, the local Democratic Party is hoping the win is a sign of things to come.
“We were excited to learn about congressman-elect Conor Lamb’s victory in Pennsylvania,” said Kristi Carr, Carter County Democratic Party chair. “The working class spoke during the special election and chose to go against the norm in their state. The Democratic Party is taking back 20-30 percent of areas carried by President Trump. This election shows that America is coming back.”
Local democrats are hoping the trend carries over to the upcoming Congressional seat that will be up for grabs in the November election. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Phil Roe is up for reelection in the primary cycle and the winner of the primary is expected to contend with East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Marty Olsen, who will be running as a democrat.
“We expect to see the wins continue throughout the election season and we expect to see one here in the First Congressional District,” Carr said. “Marty Olsen is a great candidate and is working hard to ensure he is able to come away with a victory in November.”
