An inmate at the Carter County Detention Center faces new charges after police say the inmate entered a property storage area and stole items belonging to other inmates, including a knife.
Deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dante Brown, 19, of 103 Dugger St., Hampton, and charged him with theft of property and introduction or possession of weapons in a penal facility.
According to court documents, on Tuesday night, CCSO Cpl. Brian Loffmin said Deputy McKenly Berry told him that he had found Brown in the female shower in the booking area after Deputy Triston Kyle placed him inside the shower area to use the restroom.
Berry reported to Loffmin that as he was opening the door to remove Brown from the shower area, he heard the roll door on the window separating the shower area from the female inmate property room rolling down.
“Deputy Berry found Mr. Brown with property that was taken from the female property room,” Loffmin said.
After Brown was found in possession of property belonging to other inmates, Loffmin said Sgt. Samantha Beckett directed officers to have Brown taken through the jail’s x-ray scanner.
“Before he was taken through the scanner, (Brown) handed Deputy Jeremiah Bartlett a cell phone and a glove filled with jewelry,” Loffmin said. “After he was ran through the scanner, it was seen that he had other items still on his possession.”
“Deputies Bartlett and Michael Grey escorted Mr. Brown to the male shower area and conducted another search and found more jewelry and a pocket knife on him.”
Loffmin said jail staff reviewed security camera footage, which he said showed that at 10:43 p.m., Brown rolled up the door covering the window between the shower area and property room and then enter the property room.
“Mr. Brown makes several trips back and forth in and out of the property room grabbing items out of other inmates assigned property totes,” Loffmin said.
Brown is being held in the Carter County Detention Center on charges of burglary, vandalism, and theft of property in addition to the new charges placed by Deputy Loffmin on Tuesday.
